Specializing in the identification and use of fundamental research, VT-ARC performs contract R&D on larger scale problems and at technology readiness levels beyond those generally addressed by academia. VT-ARC combines significant technical expertise with program management skills to deliver robust solutions on schedule and on budget.

Position Summary:

The Director of the Information Sciences and Analytics Division provides the vision, strategy, and leadership necessary to execute and grow the division’s applied research portfolio. Leading a team of developers, computer scientists, and program managers, the Director’s role includes applying their technical expertise on programs, cultivating a collaborative research environment across VT-ARC, and building relationships with clients that lead to new research opportunities and revenue generation. Working alongside VT-ARC’s other technical divisions and the business development and contracts teams, the Director serves as the interface between the division and executive leadership to ensure the Division’s portfolio and direction align with the VT-ARC corporate strategy. The Director reports to the Vice President of Operations and Development.


The duties of this position shall include, but are not necessarily limited to (and not listed in priority order):

  • Leading the division through vision, collaboration, and corporate acumen
  • Serving as the corporate thought leader in computer science by applying machine learning, mathematical and statistical concepts, and other cutting-edge technologies to solve client problems
  • Driving the technical team toward publishing original research and disclosing and protecting division inventions
  • Representing VT-ARC at internal and external meetings, conferences, and panels furthering collaboration, business development, and marketing efforts
  • Developing and executing the division’s portfolio strategy by identifying, cultivating and capitalizing on strategic opportunities
  • Coordinating and partnering with other divisions to increase VT-ARC’s collective value and impact for our clients
  • Engaging and growing relationships with existing and new clients to build rapport and trust; and being VT-ARC’s corporate touchpoint for the client
  • Developing relationships with Virginia Tech research staff and identifying opportunities for collaboration
  • Contributing to the drafting of white papers and proposals; advising on and approving proposed technical tasks, partnerships, and cost estimates in coordination with the contracting office
  • Communicating division efforts, portfolio performance, and sponsor relationship status to VT-ARC executive leadership
  • Supervising portfolio managers to ensure programs are sufficiently resourced and meeting contract performance, cost, schedule, and security requirements
  • Managing the technical staff and their activities including assigning projects, monitoring work quality, and ensuring adherence to organizational standards, procedures, and requirements
  • Encouraging staff ownership and initiative by seeking staff input, supporting staff ideas, appropriately delegating responsibilities, and monitoring results
  • Managing the recruitment, training, career development, and retention of new and existing staff
  • All other duties as assigned

Required Education, Certifications, Skills, Capabilities:

  • Advanced degree in computer science or other relevant technical discipline with demonstrated experience implementing ML and NLP
  • 8-12 years of post-education technical leadership experience with progressively larger and more complex tasks, projects, and programs and a proven ability to produce tangible research products such as publications, patents, or software
  • Experience leading a diverse, highly qualified workforce across a wide range of disciplines, skills, experience levels and educational backgrounds
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to present complex technical subjects to senior executives and communicate a range of corporate topics to the division workforce with clarity
  • Experience identifying, attracting, and hiring the right talent to lead new tasks, programs and initiatives

Desired Education, Certifications, Skills, Capabilities:

  • Active Top-Secret clearance (those not yet having but are suitable for obtaining a clearance may be considered on a case-by-case basis)
  • PhD in computer science with experience implementing ML and NLP
  • An extensive network of vetted individuals and organizations that can be leveraged for collaboration and/or project sponsorship
  • Technical and programmatic experience working in or with US Government agencies

Primary Work Location: Arlington, VA

Security: U.S. citizenship required. Active Top-Secret clearance highly desired, but those not yet cleared but are suitable for obtaining a clearance may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
