Position Summary:

VT-ARC is searching for a Director to lead our Information Sciences and Analytics Division. The Director will develop a vision and strategy for growing the team and performing research using state-of-the-art and emerging data science and analytics technologies. Working alongside VT-ARC’s other technical divisions and the business development and contracts teams, the Director serves as the interface between the division and executive leadership to ensure the Division’s portfolio and direction align with VT-ARC’s corporate strategy. Candidates should have demonstrated experience leading technical teams and building relationships with sponsors that lead to new research opportunities and revenue generation. The ideal candidate has a passion for cultivating a collaborative research environment and thrives in a dynamic atmosphere where business, technology, and sponsor priorities intersect.


Director responsibilities include:

  • Leading the division through vision, collaboration, and business acumen
  • Serving as the corporate thought leader in computer science by applying machine learning, mathematical and statistical concepts, and other cutting-edge technologies to solve sponsor problems
  • Driving the technical team toward publishing original research and disclosing and protecting division inventions
  • Representing VT-ARC at internal and external meetings, conferences, and panels furthering collaboration, business development, and marketing efforts
  • Developing and executing the division’s portfolio strategy by identifying, cultivating and capitalizing on compelling, technical initiatives and strategic opportunities
  • Engaging and growing relationships with existing and new sponsors to build rapport and trust
  • Coordinating and partnering with other divisions to increase VT-ARC’s collective value and impact for our sponsors
  • Developing relationships with Virginia Tech research staff and identifying opportunities for collaboration
  • Contributing to the drafting of white papers and proposals; advising on and approving proposed technical tasks, partnerships, and cost estimates in coordination with the contracting office
  • Supervising portfolio managers to ensure programs are sufficiently resourced and meeting contract performance, cost, schedule, and security requirements
  • Managing the technical staff and their activities including assigning projects, monitoring work quality, and ensuring adherence to organizational standards, procedures, and requirements
  • Managing the recruitment, training, career development, and retention of new and existing staff

Required Education, Certifications, Skills, Capabilities:

  • Advanced degree in computer science or other relevant technical discipline with demonstrated experience implementing ML and NLP
  • 10+ years of post-education technical leadership experience with progressively greater programmatic and personnel responsibility
  • Proven ability to produce tangible research products such as publications, patents, or software
  • Experience leading a diverse, highly qualified workforce across a wide range of disciplines, skills, experience levels and educational backgrounds
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to present complex technical subjects to senior executives and communicate a range of corporate topics to the division workforce with clarity
  • Experience identifying, attracting, and hiring the right talent to lead new tasks, programs and initiatives
  • Active Secret clearance or willing and able to attain one

Desired Education, Certifications, Skills, Capabilities:

  • Active Top-Secret clearance
  • PhD in computer science or related field of study
  • An extensive network of vetted individuals and organizations that can be leveraged for collaboration and/or project sponsorship
  • Technical and programmatic experience working in or with US Government agencies

Primary Work Location: Arlington, VA

Security: U.S. citizenship required. Active Top-Secret clearance highly desired, but those not yet cleared but are suitable for obtaining a clearance may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
