Gary Dooley is a Lead Software Engineer at VT-ARC where he specializes in cybersecurity, complex system design and component testing in the Engineering, Test and Evaluation Division. After COVID-19 created a national emergency, Gary went to work using his technical background combined with his personal 3D printer, to start producing face shields which are currently in short supply. Each face shield is made from polyethylene terephthalate glycol-modified (PETG) which allows the units to be sterilized and reused or even shared among other healthcare professionals. These designs are approved by the National Institutes for Health (NIH) and his effort is helping to fill a critical need in local hospitals which have suddenly become overwhelmed by COVID-19 cases. Gary’s contribution of his personal time, resources and expertise during this time of national crisis demonstrates the core value of VT-ARC; Ut Prosim (that I may serve).
